배준성 개인전: 2nd Layered on the Stage

인생이란 자기만의 무대를 펼쳐 나가는 것이다. 그러나 연극이나 공연과는 다르게 인생이라는 무대는 오로지 단 한 번의 기회만 주어질 뿐, 아무런 리허설도 소용이 없다. 영원히 단 한 번뿐인 무언가가 인생의 무대인 것이다. 그런데 배준성은 이 무대가 두 겹, 혹은 그 이상의 겹들로 이루어져 있다고 말한다. 공연장도, 대사도 정해지지 않은 나 홀로의 공연. 나는 내 인생의 총감독이자, 시간이 흘러 과거의 장면을 반추하는 유일한 관람자일 뿐이다. 무엇이 어디로 흘러갈지 아무도 모르는 상황에서 배준성은 어떻게 그런 확언을 할 수 있었던 것일까.

밀란 쿤데라는 『참을 수 없는 존재의 가벼움(1984)』에서 “삶을 위한 최초의 시연이 이미 삶 자체라면 삶은 어떤 가치가 있을 수 있을까? 이러한 근거에서 삶은 언제나 스케치와 같다. 스케치 또한 맞는 말이 아니다. 어떤 것에 대한 초안, 어떤 그림의 준비인데 반해 우리들 삶의 스케치는 무(無)에 대한 스케치로서 그림 없는 초안이기 때문이다.”라는 말을 남겼다. 우리 인생은 삶 자체가 하나의 리허설이자 본 공연인 것이다.

배준성은 이러한 철학을 재해석해 여러 겹으로 쌓인 장면, 그러니까 한 장면이 또 다른 평행세계와 이어지는 연속적인 시퀀스를 만들어 냈다. 그래서 배준성의 세계를 대표하는 키워드가 바로 ‘2nd Layered’이다. 그는 이에 대해 “그림이란 한 겹이 아닌, 두 겹 이상의 장면이 겹쳐진 것”이라고 설명한다. 그리고 이 키워드는 그의 예술 인생을 뒤바꾼 ‘렌티큘러’ 시리즈로 이어진다.

20년 이상 렌티큘러라는 재료에 몰입해 작업해 온 그는 두 겹 이상의 능동적이고 주체성을 지닌 회화를 탄생시켰다. 관람자의 행위에 따라 이미지가 능동적으로 변하는 이 새로운 회화는 다시 원상태로 돌아오기를 반복하며 영원회귀적 이미지를 선보인다. 최근에는 이에 대한 연장선으로 ‘on the Stage’ 시리즈를 발표했다. 렌티큘러에서 다시 회화로 돌아오며 회화의 본질을 찾기 위한 시도로 시작된 ‘on the Stage’는 ‘렌티큘러’ 시리즈와는 외관상 전혀 다른 양상을 띤다. 그러나 이 두 시리즈는 ‘차이’와 ‘반복’이라는 배준성 예술 세계의 핵심을 정확히 관통한다.

‘렌티큘러’ 시리즈에서는 이미지가 변화하며 즉각적이고 직관적인 차이와 반복을 연속적으로 선보였다면, ‘on the Stage’ 시리즈에서는 이것이 하나의 캔버스 속에서 나열된다. “원숭이 엉덩이는 빨개, 빨가면 사과, 사과는 맛있어”라는 구전 동요의 한 구절처럼 하나의 인상이 다른 인상으로 가지치듯 뻗어나가며, 반복적인 행위에서 차이가 발생해 결국 전혀 다른 결과물을 가져오게 된다. 즉, 배준성의 예술 세계는 삶이 교차되면서 이중 구조를 띠는 것과 같다. 결과적으로 배준성의 작업은 인생이라는 무대를 비유하는 또 하나의 거울이다. 단 한 번뿐인 삶은 그의 작품 속에서는 끊임없이 겹쳐지고 반복되며 또 다른 차원으로 이어지고 있다.

Life is the process of unfolding a stage of one's own. Yet, unlike a play or a performance, the stage of life offers but a single opportunity; no amount of rehearsal can prepare us for it. It is an irrevocably singular event. However, Bae Joon-sung suggests that this stage consists of two, or perhaps even more, overlapping layers. It is a solo performance where neither the venue nor the script is predetermined. I am at once the director of my own life and its sole spectator, reflecting upon scenes of the past as time flows by. In a situation where no one knows where anything is headed, how could Bae Joon-sung make such an assertion?

In The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1984), Milan Kundera wrote: “If the first rehearsal for life is life itself, what can life be worth? That is why life is always like a sketch. No, 'sketch' is not quite the word, because a sketch is an outline of something, the preparation for a picture, whereas the sketch that is our life is a sketch for nothing, an outline without a picture.” Our existence is a paradox where the rehearsal and the final performance are one and the same. Bae Joon-sung reinterprets this philosophy by creating sequential scenes composed of multiple layers—sequences where one scene leads into another parallel world. Consequently, the defining keyword of Bae’s universe is "2nd Layered." He explains, “A painting is not a single layer, but a convergence of two or more scenes.” This concept naturally evolved into his "Lenticular" series, a body of work that redefined his artistic career.

Having immersed himself in the medium of lenticular for over 20 years, Bae has birthed paintings that possess an active, independent agency. In these works, images transform dynamically in response to the viewer's movement, repeatedly returning to their original state to present an image of eternal recurrence. More recently, as an extension of this exploration, he unveiled the "On the Stage" series. Marking a return from lenticular to traditional painting—an attempt to rediscover the essence of the medium—"On the Stage" appears visually distinct from the "Lenticular" series. Nevertheless, both series penetrate the core of Bae’s artistic world: the concepts of "Difference" and "Repetition."

While the "Lenticular" series showcased immediate and intuitive difference and repetition through shifting images, the "On the Stage" series arranges these elements within a single canvas. Much like the progression of a nursery rhyme where one association branches into the next, repetitive actions give rise to differences, eventually leading to entirely different outcomes. In essence, Bae Joon-sung’s artistic world mirrors the dual structure of intersecting lives. Ultimately, his work serves as another mirror reflecting the stage of life. In his art, the singular event of life is constantly overlapped and repeated, extending into entirely new dimensions.

The exhibition 2nd Layered on the Stage is a synthesis of Bae Joon-sung’s artistic universe.
